Happy Bloggiversary to me!

I really started blogging a year ago. I was much smaller (3 months old!) and not as wise.

I appreciate all of you sticking around to hear of my tales of woe including the evil Buster, my delightful sister and my dental crises.

I send each and everyone of you a big smooch!

Woodwork will be bluebonnet. Walls will be crystal lake.

I'm not not much of a DIY guy, but since they have decided to redecorate my bathing bathroom, I decided that I would participate in the tsping of the walls and going to the hardware store to pick paint colors.

More to follow.

I was very good.

My pal Wally has tagged me to tell you eight things about me.

1. My moms found me on the internets while sort of searching for bassets and sort of not and not really wanting one, but sort of wanting one, you know what I mean? I was the only link on the BHCA page for Washington that had a web page. When N.mom saw some of my relatives, she fell in love and sent an email inquiring if there would be litter expected anytime soon.
2. The email was received, but the reply email went to her spam box! I could have not been found if n.mom had just deleted her spam box without looking at the message headers!
3. My original name was Kirby, after Kirby Puckett. My sister's name is Phrace, after Mama Stephanie's favorite Aunt Phrace.
4. I am named after Ernest Shackleton, the Polar explorer. My middle name is Henry after Henry Hudson, another famous explorer. I go by Ernest, E.dd, Ezp, Ernest the puppy, ernesto, ernest-no, tiny dog, teeny tiny basset baby boy (well maybe not so much any more). My AKC name is Oxboro Miles from our home. I am named after a Cowboy Junkies song. Do you like them? My moms do.
5. I am afraid of cats, all cats.
6. I am really a lap dog, I love laps more than anything. I will curl up in your lap in heartbeat even if I weigh 50 lbs and stay there for a long time.
7. My n.mom has kept every email about me including my weekly correspondence with my sister. Yes, my sister and I still email eachother about our exploits. Maybe one day these will go into my presidential archives.
8. I am probably the friendliest dog you'll meet. I'm good with children, other dogs and people. I'll make a fine president.

Now, I'm tagging Roxy, Ko, and the General.

Poor TH person/mom/will bender,

The seas look nasty, I hope that there are enough popsicles to go around. I prefer red myself.

If it gets worse, its okay to crawl into your kennel and not come out until it is calm again.

If you have to work, N.mom/person said the quarterdeck is a good place to curl up and feel like dying, the breeze helps.

I guess I won't complain about lockdown again. I have it easy.

e.dd who wishes everyone calm seas

It is warmish today, so I am under house arrest.

They say its for my own good, but I am not very happy.

I think summer will be hard for tiny dogs who don't do well in the heat.

blue corn chips - organic and yummy

Um, I have had a busy basset day.

Walkies, chasing my new kongie toy, napping, keeping vigil because N.mom went to have her hairs ripped from her brows, a visit to the University to pick up N.mom and Auntie J's race bibs for tomorrow. I managed to remove five baseball caps from the basket on the blanket chest and chew on them!

I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. I hope something better than tortilla chips.

Smooches.

TH mom went that a way today. I am not amused.

I wish I was a pirate basset so that I could sail with her, just like the General did from England to the Falklands.

Sunday, May 13, 2007

Really, its all about FBS, Friendly butt sniffing.

I went to the dog park today with all these other bassets but I did not really enjoy myself. I love most dogs, but I need them to engage me. The bassets didn't and I ended up not being a very polite guy.

N.mom made me go to another part of the park where I got to run around with labs, lurchers and other running dogs.

It was fun!

The bath I had later was not fun, but I smell really good and am very very soft.

I wish you all could come with me to the dog park. I know my cyberpals would know how to have a rocking good time.

I'm off to the Academy today while the moms fly to Boston to deal with a family crisis.

I hope they bring me a lobster.

I am very sad today and so are my moms. My half sister went to the bridge yesterday and they are so sad because she fought so hard and so many people prayed and sent good thoughts for her.

My flickr picture today sums it up the bestest.

Ernest is mad.

Please give your puppies a smoochie and a hug from me, the tiny dog. I know that I would have loved to play chase with her.

I was once tiny too.

The couch was covered with things so that I couldn't get on it. The doorstop was/is tasty and that big green box in the distance. That was my bedroom. They had to fill it with lots of wineboxes to make it smaller for me.

I was always afraid they would collapse on me.

Guest Editorial:

Nine Things that I, (N.mom) love about Ernest
May 6, 2007 Seattle, WA

1. The fact that Ernest trusts me enough to post his pictures of him in the bath with his chicken on the internet
2. That Ernest believes that one day he will run for president and win
3. Ernest at 50 lbs and 14 months still thinks he's a tiny puppy and will curl up to take a nap on your lap
4. That he loves his sister more than anything in the world
5. He can be trusted to guard the couch for up to four hours a time by himself now
6. He can use the internet better than most adults
7. In the dead of sleep I can remove his harness before bed and he does not snap and growl
8. At the dog park, he's a crazed running machine and can run for miles and miles
9. He's happy in a pack and being a solitary basset at home

With apologies to Ko.

After a good trounce at the dog park, Ernest and Henrietta both need a good scrub.

No chickens were harmed during the bath and the shampoo was deemed cruelty free and safe for all species.

Ernest does like his Khiels, but does not work for the company. He has been seen lounging around the U Village store, but only because they invite him in.

Given my fondness for sheep and goats and other dogs, I have decided that we need a new sheep/dog hybrid.

I am now asking the moms about getting me my own Bedlington Terrier.

You think that will fly?

I got to see pictures of my new brothers and sister. They are very tiny and cute. I hope they get good homes and love like I did.

Moms are getting verklempt over the whole thing - tiny puppies and what not. I think it may be time to up their omega-3s that they keep on hiding in my food.

Yesterday I worked on bending the will of my people to do what I wish. There are lots of whoo whoo gurus who make lots of money doing this and end up on shows like Breakfast TV and Oprah. I merely think with all my might, creasing my brow and wrinkle my nose and usually it works.

They sometimes think I'm asleep, but this works even while I look like I'm asleep.

Case in point, Saturday afternoon after we did all their boring people errands - brow waxes, flower purchases, bakery purchases (nothing for moi), farmer's market and the regular store they took me home.

I thought they would call it day and let me relax.

They had different plans, a plan that involved a drive, a groomer and a dremel.

I hate having my weekends ruined by that.

So, I grudgingly went into the car, waited while n.mom ran some errands, went to the library and then came home.

She totally forgot to take me to the groomers.

It worked!

Other than that, busy basset weekend - Arboretum Benefit, gardening, bone eating, running around pulling out plant tags, hiding my bum and taking a few naps. My people assure me that other than one evening event this week, they are going to be my side, bending to my will.

As a young lad, I loved sheep more than almost everything (other than my sister). I liked living in Seattle except I missed my sheep. My sister still lives with some sheep and S.mom often emails us and tell us what is happening with the sheep at Rancho Oxboro.

If I had my way, we would have a sheep so that I had someone to play with. However, this is ridiculous.

Sheep masquerading as a poodle? Impossible!

My head hurts just thinking about it.

My mom is bored, tired and cranky. She did this tonight in Corel Paint Shop Pro. She got the great idea to sepiaize me from her pal JetSquirrel from Flickr.

Survival of the fastest, Ernest and Scruffy.

Not much to report here.

I'm enjoying my duck and potato dinners. Mostly, plain, but still I'll hold out for an amendment.

Tonight I had salmon, rice with herbs and kibble. It was very good.

They claim that soon I'll have to start eating veggies again, I say, no way. That was then (I was a tiny puppy). I am much bigger and wiser now.

I am free! I am the Seattle One!

I am exhausted. I had a busy basset weekend.

Moms went to the Farmer's Market and bought me my own beef soup bones and let me take one out to the back garden.

It was delicious and then they made sure I would let them have it without any growling. I let them have it, I must have passed some test.

Cousin Scruffy came over for the night. We played a lot. I love him and we play kissy face all the time. He's an Idaho potato terrier who lives at Mt. Rainier and knows lots of about National Park Planning. He's going to be my Secretary of Interior when I am elected president, but he may be running as my vice presidential candidate if he's up for public scrutiny.

He's so handsome.

N.mom and Aunt Pat talked a lot this weekend about life, which is good because Scruffy and I get to walk together while they talk. N.mom taught Aunt Pat about the crunching of snails, Aunt Pat finally got into the groove. She sees more banana slugs and elk than snails, but that is what you get for living where you don't have a starbucks every half block and no cell phone reception.

Hmm, maybe that will change.

Anyways, I am tired now, so I'm going to spend the rest of the evening snoring.

I have had a very busy basset weekend.

On Saturday, I went to the first of what I believe to be many boring plant sales with my people. I can't understand why anyone would plant anything that does not yield blueberries, blackberries or raspberries or trees.

Trees are good for peeing on the soft fruits are good for eating.

Everything else, meh.

Since it was a benefit for the Arboretum Foundation, I was most welcome. I am their favourite basset as I have been going to their events since I was a tiny lad.

Next week they say it has something to do with Alliances of Perennials, but they promised me a long walk. Cool.

I then jumped up on my Aunt Ruth's mom, which was considered inappropriate behavior and was banished to my kennel.

Then n.mom left to walk a long 13.1 miles. I was pretty good.

The next day we went to see her, that was fun! I rode the ferry, we watched them finish and got lots of scritches.

Tiny dog, February 2007.

Last night n.mom suggested that we move my large couch to the front window for the summer allowing tiny bassets the ability to look out the window during the summer months when he is stuck at home during the day.

This would requiring moving the rocking chairs and chairs not suitable for basset vigils to the long windows that get covered up during the summer days (southern exposure and what not).

Cheap and easy (not really) to try.

T.mom is not as interested as it may affect napping karma on summer afternoons.

I say bring get that furniture dolly and lets get cracking.

Getting my calcium, Ernest the puppy, April 2007.

I need to update you all on my days., they are pretty boring, but they are mine.

Note to G.Jackson ---I am not going grey, I do have white in my muzzle, but I was born with it. I remain a handsome dog.

N.mom is concerned that the tops of my ears are going brown. I think it is fine, she wants to keep me out of the sun.

Please advise.

Okay.

My day is pretty boring. I get up, stretch and go out. Three days a week I accompany my n.mom to a lake near our house. We have to go in the car, but then I get to chase ducks, view wildlife and meet other dogs. It is about 3 miles around and she says I am slowing her down, but she doesn't complain too much.

If we stay home, I take her on a walk around the neighborhood that ranges from .5 miles to a mile, depending. I like to see what is blooming and see what my cat enemies are up to. I know lots of people and their dogs, so it is a nice walk.

After any walk, there is food.

I like most food, but all kibble tastes better with cottage cheese or some kind of amendment.

After that, there is squeaking, running around and then maybe a nap.

Usually, I have to get dressed (harness) and then we go to work.

Oh, don't worry, I don't have to use computers or attending boring meetings, I sit in the car and take a nap.

Yes, I am in a crate, but I am happy and so are they. Right now, it is still cool.

They check on me at 10:30 and then at lunch I get to go for a walk, my choice varies. I like to see different things, buoys, weather stations, the wetlands or the next door dog park. If I don't like the fact that they are taking me back to the car, I work on my flat basset.

There are lots of lawns at work, they are good for naps.

Then back in the car after some water and a snack.

Sometimes, they take me for a walk after work, if not I go home and make them take me again.

I average between 3 to 5 miles a day.

Dinner is a nice time for me to think about how to drive them crazy.

They try and eat and then I convince them that I need to go out. I have them trained to go out at my will.

We go at least one more time, usually to make sure all cats are inside. I spend the time between walks trying to lean into TH mom's lap or work on my vulture basset.

I usually start conking out at 9 pm. I get a bit crabby and start digging in the couch.

I can be coaxed into my crate for a bisquit, but usually after they battle with me to clean my teeth.

The next day it starts again.

I am tired just thinking about it!

The better half, Ernest the puppy, April 2007.

I turned thirteen months today, so did Phracey!

They left me at home twice today by my lonesome.

This required bravery on my part.

I am tired from keeping a watch out for my people to return from wherever they went.

They are considering the purchase of a Ernest only chair so that I may keep a vigil more comfortably. I say, do it, and not let price be a barrier.

They told me to hold my horses, I have no idea how I would do that, but it sounds hard.

Ernest who is now recovering from having to stand in a chair for two hours.

I had many different roommates - a cairn terrier, two beagles, a dalmatian, a cocker spaniel and a yellow lab! I had fun.

Apparently no one would room with the cairn terrier, but she got along with me. It must be my boyish good looks and my ability to woo my constituents.

I'm on the back of the couch now. N.mom has not removed the stupid bandana they tied on my after my bath. It must be removed before my next walk. I do not wish to be laughed at.

This week I have been learning about teeth brushing and my tolerance to nasty tastes.

Poultry toothpaste - yummy, good with a bisquit chaser.

Berry blast toothpaste - ick.

Mint toothpaste - you are trying to kill me!

Too bad the vet is out of poultry toothpaste.

Then again, why are the strictures of human kind to put on basset hounds? Why must our breath be minty fresh? Maybe it is perfectly normal to smell like you just ate a fermented vole.

No dogs have complained about my breath, just n.mom.

Hmm.

Where was I?

Right, my people sent me off to the kennel while they went in search of bonios and plastic bottles for me. I had a dandy time with my roommates - an Aussie cattle dog named Katy (yes, a female, whoo hoo) and a yellow lab named Sonic who kept me on my toes. I had fun and was very tired when I got home.

I guess I missed some weather. Good thing too, I don't think I like wind very much.

They brought a tree in the house. It confuses me. It also moves which really confuses me.

I am bigger and still really very much the man of the house. Even though they insist on calling me pet names instead of Ernest the man dog.

We're going to have to work on this.

More later, I need a nap.

I am part of a basset hound message board and we are having a holiday card exchange. It is so neat, my mom makes the card, pays for the card, writes the card, stamps the card, addresses the card and I get 50 cards in the mail.

Is this what being a boss is like?

I love the cards I am getting, my mailman Steve wanted to know why I was getting more cards than anyone else on the block.

When I run for President, I may make my mom chief of communications.

I also had many small children at my house yesterday. They screamed, petted me and I got to eat their cookies.

It was fun!

I am super wound up today, my moms have offered to take me to the Village to buy my sister's present.

I am nine months old today. So far this week, I have managed to destroy a library book and eat the cord on the soul sucking vacuum cleaner. Unfortunately, it still works.

Other than that, I am my normal angelic self.

rock on dudes.
