Monitors for ernest swap
A successful transaction was conducted at the Burgerville in Vancouver, the one by the WSU campus. As usual, I was aloof and ignored the moms. On the way home, I napped as best as I could CONSIDERING THE LANE CHANGES that woke me up.

I tried to get them to stop at the Governor's mansion to complain about the roadway from milepost 18 to 140, but alas, they said NO.

I am home, I have eaten, I have rung my bell to go out 4565 times. They have bent to my will once. My kitchen is completely bare and there are boxes everywhere. I have been told that the next three days the kitchen is off limits. I hope they remembered to get my bowl and treats.

I am happy to be home and to my couch. I do miss my Sissy and the sheep and FREEDOM to go out and in at my WILL.

sincerely,

Happy Christmas to all!

I'll be back tomorrow to tell you all about my adventures. Suffice it to say, they are still negotiating my release and in the mean time, I am giving the 509 a run for the money.

The moms have an idea -- they are going to take 11 imac monitors to the Apple Store and see if they can trade them in for one iphone.

Then they can trade the iphone for me!

If not, they are going to try and get another 18 to up the ante.

I am sorry I'm not in the 206 enjoying the snow. The moms have been out in it and said that its deeper than a basset butt, whatever that means.

I have told them over and over to stay away from the yellow stuff. It is not limoncello flavored.

I don't think I'll be at home with my peeps until after Xmas.

However, I'm with my homies in the 509 where I am currently in negotiations for my release. They are looking to trade me for 19 imac monitors sometime next week.

I'm behind my Phracey, but still in front of the pack.

It is still cold in the 509. An earnest (hah) attempt was made today to get me home by Papa J, but TH mom and Mama S. made him stay home. The moms have promised me a trip home on Boxing day. Secretly, I think they want to make snow bassets up at the pass and avoid Boxing day sales. They remain nuts.

However, for your viewing pleasure, Papa J. has put up a page of naked basset pictures in the snow.

Hi.

I'm still in the 509.

Its supposed to be below zero tomorrow.

Did I tell you that I am a basset with a very thin coat?

We were not allowed to walk today.

I am a basset who requires exercise for proper maintenance.

I wonder if I can get Spot to plan a jail break.

I hope Papa J can take a few pictures of us in the snow.

getting ready for new hampshire, i suppose

Hi.

I've been remiss in blogging. I should really say that NaPoBloMo really kicked nmom's butt. She really needs to chill.

I think I'll send her back to Greenland.

In other news, I am currently hosting and jumping on a scientist who is from New Zealand. He did not bring me any sheep. That is okay though because as of Sunday, I'm back in the 509 while both my peeps go to see the SUMDs.

Check out Aunt Kerrio's flickr page to see all the new SUMDs that she and Uncle Brian are fostering.

They rock.

The promised to bring me back a beautiful and taller female dog. I hope my sissy doesn't get too jealous.

getting better rice grain by rice grain

I have been sick. So sick, they rescued me early from lockdown so that the moms could take me to my physician the night I came home.

I am not going into the details of my malady, but let's say it looked worse than I felt.

Because of it, I am getting lots of smooches, paw holding, chicken and rice and atta boys.

I appear to be better after one day of stomach coatings and flagyl.

The moms have to get up every eight hours to squirt nasty stomach coating down my gullet. Nmom is much better at it than Tmom.

My Mama S and Papa J were three miles from me and didn't stop. I am a bit sad and mad. I promise them the next time they come to town they will get escorted to all the attractions by me!

upon relection 2

Nmom is a bit antsy these days. I am trying to take her on a bunch of walks and dog park visits, but she would rather obsess about the presidential race -one.where.i.am.not.the.leading.candidate.

Well, whatever.

Tonight I would like to dispel a few myths about me.

Just because I am often seen in a red harness does not make me a republican or a republican sympathizer.

Just because I am intact - does not mean I'm a social conservative that does not allow other dogs the right to choose. Though, I fear my days of intactness may be over soon.

Just because I expect a million walks and all the attention focused on me does not make me a member of generation ME!

When I was a tiny puppy, I was told that I could be president. I made it my goal and though I tried to get there this time, I was vanquished. Some said I was too green, some said I was too red, some said it was the fact that I was a purebred basset -- others thought it was because I had the balls to run for president.

Well, I tried and trust me I'll try again!

Thank you for you support these last two years and nearly eight months.

I smooch you all.

I want to give some special shout outs to

Scruffy the playmate
Wally the corgador

and all the dogs with blogs for being the dogs who blog about the most interesting things.

Hopefully our new commander of apes will do a better job than the last chimp, he sucked.

Today my nmom gave me what she said was going to be the last table water cracker of the republican reign on terror. I relished it and look forward to a new box and a better world tomorrow.

Guest Post by N.mom.

Miss Cleo - we will miss you.

The SUMDs are having some more tears. I am not amused. I will miss the long legged and gentle beauty that was Cleo. I was lucky enough to see her this past September. She was sweet, darling and so calm. Again, my heart goes out to Kerri, Brian, Pat and the SUMDs. I'm sure Meggie and Kubrin are ready to chase you through a field up in heaven.

Honestly, this can stop now.

Today, Ernest and I went to the beach at the dog park. We met a lovely wolfhound/labrador cross named Eddie. Because of the SUMDs and Finest Finnegan, we realized that hounds don't have to have six inches of clearance and long ears to be special. Wolfies, Greyhounds, Deer Hounds and Bloodhounds are also pretty cool and can help the wrinkly dwarf dogs get things off the counter.

Cloe - we will miss you.

the greening of ernest

I was let go by my dog walker.

Yup. I did not come back when she called me.

I guess I didn't do the right thing, but my mom's friends all say (or are
trying to make her feel better) and say that most dogs don't come back to someone
the first time they go somewhere with them. Mostly, because I can't even remember what she looked like.

So, we're working on recall now. I am good at it when I am an one on one basset, even at the park or outdoors.

My mom isn't so happy because the dog walker didn't call her until Sunday afternoon to tell her this.

My Tmom says that this weekend we can practice at work on a long leash with lots of biscuits!

Nmom is still going to take me to the park, but is going to be a hard ass about my comings and goings.

Two more sleeps until my Tmom comes home and takes me for at least two walks before she leaves again.

I am tired. Must have been a wild time at the dog park, nmom didn't get a report. However, I fell asleep after dinner, so I must be tired. Usually, nmom can't even finish her own dinner before I start ring a dinging to go for my fourth walk of the day.

homies at the park
My mom has given up on me, for some reason, she doesn't believe she has the strength or time to take me on three hour long walks daily. Instead of driving me to Nebraska where she was considering abandoning me, she decided to hire a dog walker to take me to the park at lunch time! She also considered sending me to Kerri and Brian's but the fuel surcharges would have killed her.

Woot!

I get to go the park with my pal Finnegan and have someone else bend to my will.

Nmom is not going to do this very often, but I think it should be fun. Today I went to the park and played with a bunch of other dogs. One beagle something mix jumped up on an overhanging willow branch and jumped in the water. I was jealous because he was brave to go in the water. I just supervised and made sure no one had eaten for 30 minutes before going in the water.

Tmom sent a picture today with lots of snow. It looked not just cold, but grey. I will settle for cold, crisp and blue, thanks.

Well, my dog walker should be here soon to check me out. She already knows me but I'm sure there is some sort of something that needs some sort of legal signature.

This weekend I plan to do some major bone chewing while nmom does some gardening. She said something about bulbs, but I think she really meant bones.

wondering what the big deal was with grunge

I'm sure Wally and TofuBurger can tell the rest of you where this picture was taken. It was taken at a very well known piece of publicly funded art that is no longer accessible to the public due to the Republicans hating the Democrats or something.

Anyhow, its right by my personal egress to the dog park! The best part of the dog park -- the water! As you know, bassets don't swim but they like to run back and forth the shoreline barking at the dogs who are brave enough to go into the water. I do it when I am allowed and honestly, I think most of the time I am the loudest one there.

Today my mom left me at home and went to dinner with my grand mere, grand pere and Uncle Al. When she returned she brought me some guiltscuits - biscuits purchased out of guilt of leaving me for two hours by myself. She also bought me some foodables as I am nearly out. I hope she remembers to steam some sweet potatables for my breakfast tomorrow.

Tmom says the weather is sucking the big one in Iceland. However, she also said the food was much improved over Greenland and that their sessions go after dinner when people are snozzled. I guess anyone's graphs of the rise and fall of the Greenlandic shrimp production versus solar flares look better after half a bottle of wine.

Well, I need to go chase my tail before bed.

casting a long shadow

Dog Park!

I woke up at 515 with a bile issue. I took nmom on a walk at 520. We got back at 600. When nmom got back from the gym I decided that it was time for a walk or a visit to the dog park.

Nmom told me to cool my jets.

I did, in the car.

Then we went to the park at lunch. It was chock a block full of dogs and I had a blast with all the dogs.

Tomorrow, she promised more of the same!

Tmom - I am sorry its snowing and cold and dark. Its going to be sunny here tomorrow, I wish you were here with us!

Did you really think I was going to listen to you?
My TH mom is in Iceland again. I have no idea why anyone would want to go there. I guess she's in the process of buying it or something.

Actually, she's there to give a talk about stuff that is not of great interest to bassets.

In any case, my nmom is taking care of me and honestly, not doing a very good job as all will in the 98105 has not been bent to my needs.

Yesterday I took my grandmere to a nursery up in a different area code. It was fun. Today I spent the day at home, but still went on four walks. Its boring now because it gets dark so early, so I am pretty much ready for bed at 7:30 pm. Nmom likes this because she says she can do things without my assistance.

TH mom usually walks me at lunch time and now my nmom has to do this. She finally met the construction worker whose sandwich I try to steal every day. We took my walk too late and he was done with his sandwich. He could have at least left me the crustables.

Tomorrow is supposed to be nice and dry. I hope Nmom takes me for a super long walk in the morning. Maybe even going to the dog park! A guy can only dream.

Speaking of dreaming. I have finally finished all my kibbleables and water and now its time for me to hit the sack for good.

To every path there is an obstacle.

I am feeling a bit better. I have no parasites in my stools (TMI), I am awake and bored and ready to go. I have had approximately 1.5 cups of rice and 2 oz. of chicken in the past 24 hours and I am still hungry.

The doctor says there is something going around or that I had a little too much roast beef on Sunday.

I am huuungry.

I am still active.

I am still happy, but I am hungry.

I lost .2 lbs since last week.

I am being given 1/2 cup rice every four to six hours plus a little chicken broth and chicken breast meat. If I don't get better by tomorrow, they are going to try something else. Nmom has to go out now and buy me some pepcid-ac.

Poor me.

Please send biscuits to the 98105 if you have some to spare.

Oh hi.

Sorry I have been so absent. In the last two weeks I have been good, been bad, had a bit of a wonky stomach, hung out with my friends at the dog park, gone on a road trip to Portland, attended my first marathon and participated at mile 7, 11 and 21!

My best friend Scruffy, the Idaho Potato Terrier came over and we played hard yesterday.

I am also trying to keep my moms calm (well, really n.mom) in these turbulent times. She said something about IRAs, scum derivatives, investment bankers and retirement. She hasn't looked so hot the last few days.

friday morning at the dog park

I have been visiting the dog park a few mornings a week. Its a nice dog park, with a dog leg that leads to the water.

I usually am a good boy and listen and sometimes even come back when called.

Recently, I have not been such a good boy.

This means that I have to do the perp walk out of the park ON MY PINK LEASH.

How embarrassing is that?

Tomorrow morning, n.mom promised me the park! I am so excited. Everyone loves me there except for one grumpy fellow, but his mom keeps him away from me.

basset nirvana

A few things of note...

My car is fixed. I am now safe to drive in the basset not so furry mobile! Yeah mom. I'm sorry it was so expensive, but I think I'm worth it.

TH mom is soo close to Sophie, but can't get to her. She better bring me back something really good from CANADA!

My uncle Al took everyone out for dinner tonight. Nmom and GP were nice enough to leave me some filetmignonables. Yum.

Thanks for going with medium, the rare stuff is hard on my tummy.

They always talk about the white box around here. My predecessor, Jacques was famous for getting really good white boxes. This is my first real white box and it was delicious. Tomorrow for breakfast I am having mignonables mixed in with my squashables.

TH mom purports to be coming back on Saturday night, Nmom wants to do a 20 mile walk. That seems long to me, I guess TH mom is stuck with me for at least six hours. I guess we're going to have to work on bell ringing and outdoor chewing.

quit shoving the camera in my face

Today we played operation rescue Ernest!

Nmom put me in the kennel in the better basset mobile, we went to the dog park where I made sure that other dogs got some exercise and then we went home.

She went to pop the tail gate and it wouldn't open.

Did she mention this car has no interior handle?

Did I mention that I was freaking out?

Did she mention that she was freaking out?

So, she pulled the kennel forward and then opened the door and then moved it over and I popped out the side door.

Did she mention that the garage needs to take the whole panel off the tailgate at 98 dollars a hour and then fix it and it will easily cost 500 dollars?

Did she mention that she just took the car to the dealer to have them tell her the check engine light code is really telling her that her gas cap is not screwed on tight enough? Did she mention that this cost her 98 bucks?

Did she mention that she wanted to tell them to screw off? (Naughty mom)

Did she mention that if it had been hot and there had been no way of getting the kennel out of the car I would be really scared and overheated or even worse?

Did she mention that she would have paid a million dollars to get me out in that case or any case? Did she mention that due to the financial crisis that now would be even harder?

So, I'm out on my couch and my tummy is full of squashables, a bit of kibble and some biscuits. Nmom went to grand mere's and grand pere's and mom climbed into the back of the wagon and collapsed the wire crate with the help of GP and now I get to ride in GP's jeep for the rest of the week?

Did she mention that GM was not amused by this thought?

Anyways, all is well that ends well. Nmom is relieved that I am okay and that the kennel is out. She wouldn't want the Volvo technician to charge her 98 bucks just to get the kennel out of the car.

Whew, that was long.

I'll be back to regular blogging. My mom is feeling better after walking 60 miles a few weeks ago and my TH mom should be back from CANADA soonest.

Oh Hai!

I'm being a pretty good boy. I'm really a bit worried about things in the presidential race, but I'm sure that Ms. Palin will get it good soon. What a nut. Phracey, who continues to amaze me with her hunting skills, her no nonsense approach to life and her ability to stay non-pregnant even with all these amorous advances would have made a much better vice presidential contender. She's completely left of the center, so maybe that wouldn't have worked. I think she outweighs Cindy McCain, so she could have kicked her ass.

Its not like Palin has anything interesting to say.

I do. ALways, apparently I am quite hoarse because I talk to anyone who will listen to me.

My moms are back from Greenland and based on my limited correspondence with them while they were without blackberry coverage, I am purportedly the luckiest basset on the planet because I am tied up to a rock for the summer like the sledge dogs they saw all over middle western Greenland.

I believe they were considering buying all the dogs they met dog beds.

Things are getting crazy on the convention floor here in Denver!

And it did not involve a four legged delegate!

Spot, Clancy. Puff, Evita. Lucille, Mama Stephanie and I were taking our normal walk through the DNC and you will never guess what we saw!

About four feet from the ground, safely out of the reach of some very curious Basset Hounds there were two nuthatches having a fight! They were so occupied with trying to kill each other that they never noticed we were under them. Very strange.

I ate all of my food and some of Spot’s food today. I am hungry. My sissy is smelling better and better every day, but I know that I could not win the nomination if I tried to woo her. Clancy says that it is not yet time to get our dander up and he knows, so I'll listen to him, for once.

I'm in Denver right now trying to get a howl in edgewise. That Michele Obama is quite a stage hog.

Other than that, I have been keeping busy trying to impress the girls, its not working. I have been participating in fence races with Spider from the Happy Tails Home for Wayward Rottweillers next door. Timmy won but I came in second! kissing babies

Today I am going to give some advice to those of you who may be trying to make a positive impression on new people -- this could be a job interview, a pitch for a product, meeting the new inlaws or just trying to speed date.

For your information, I have given lots of interviews and met lots of people in my short rein as the only basset hound worthy of the highest public office and know what I am talking about. These hints are solid, some of which I should follow myself on a regular basis.

1. Putting your paws in someone's crotch when you first meet them is not good form.
2. Don't forget to lift your leg before entering the room, not after you arrive.
3. Chewing on the pencils or table legs is probably not going to get you into the second round of
interviews.
4. References should be positive, so maybe not the one from the lady with the dead yew in her front garden.
5. If things are going bad, you can always roach or commando crawl and everyone will think you are cute and love you any way.

alpha dog crop

From the desk of Ernest the Basset:

Papa Joe and Mama Stephanie came home early on Monday evening. I told them how happy I was to see them.

While they were gone, Spot the bad figured out how to open his kennel door. Kathy had to catch him and put him back in his kennel. He was living with Timmy the flat coat who did not go out the door.

This morning on the walk Phrace the Miscreant and Spot the Bad dug their way under the gate in the driveway. Everybody else including me The Good stayed in the yard. Mama Stephanie and Papa Joe spent two hours looking for Phrace the Miscreant and Spot the Bad. Papa Joe and Mama Stephanie finally went down to the creek. Papa Joe found them behind the neighbor’s house in the creek munching on dead squirrels! The neighbor shoots the squirrels and throws the carcasses down the embankment.

Mama Stephanie told Phrace and Spot that they were not going on the walks any more and will have to walk on leash until; the gate issue is solved.

I am being very good. I have eaten my food every day. I have not seen a squirrel but I did chase two cats! I miss you and I will be very happy to see you.

Sincerely and with great love of the couch,

Greetings from the 509. I have been here for eight days with many more to go as the moms have decided that all this back and forth to and froing to lockdown and home is killing them.

So, with Timmy the flat coat, the Nobel Spot and Phracey I play and squeak and bay.

So far it appears that the squirrels are winning. I have yet to catch one -maybe next week.

Bummer.

I am missing the moms a tiny bit, but I think they are really missing me the mostest. It is because of me they know exactly what the neighbors are drinking.

Papa J is supposed to give nmom a link to some pictures so that you can see what I am up to.

However, for now, you can look at a cute picture of me as a tiny basset puppy.

Hi!

This weekend I had house guests - one two footed and two pawed and two four pawed.

Guess who?

Right -- Mama S, Phracey and Noble Spot!

It was fun.

I am tired.

do not disturb, love ernest

We wrestled, we tugged, we fought and we napped. I used Spot's ear as a chew toy. It was delicious. In fact, it brought him good luck and he won best of opposite sex at dog show. Forget the buddha rubbing, let me chew on your ear for good luck and fortune.

Now I'm in the 509 hanging with my homies.

kubrin, my horse in a wolfies body

The saddest thing.

Nmom got to meet Kubrin and Meggie and Boots, Cleo and Tealeaf last summer.

She writes about it here.

She will miss them all and I will miss their antics as well.

bone and kiwi

bassety updates:

In a little over 48 hours Phrace and Nobel Spot will be in the 98105!

Yesterday I hid all my precious stuffie/squeakies way up high so that not even Kubrin can get them. My sissie is hard on stuffies and I am in love with my squeakies from my grandmere.

TH mom promises that Phracey and I get to work on scaring the mean cats of the neighborhood.

Mama S. will get a nice steak dinner, some down time and everyone is going to come over to meet everyone! Is that cool or what?

Ficus, our ficus, is going into hiding as Nobel Spot is having a hard time distinguishing between indoor and outdoor trees.

Nmom is leaving (harumph) for a weekend of female bonding and camping and walking 37 miles. What a nut.

I'll be out of touch for a while after that, Mama S is taking me to Oxboro for the next six weeks. Not to fear, there will be updates galore and some of my deeper musings that I have been cogitating on for a while -- think of them as my position papers for the next regime.

swollen noses

This was my swollen nose. It is better now.

I am currently with Rocky, the basseherd and a pit cross. Apparently, we are having a good time running around and jumping on each other.

This may be reason enough to get me a bruddar.

Kindly tell me what is wrong with this picture?

Nothing really, but what seems different?

Will it hurt my political career or will it bolster it?

My nose is getting better but currently it is occupying half of the living room.

ernest whose nose knows
Update!

I have a humongous lopsided nose due to a yellow jacket that stung me yesterday.

I see benadryl, smooches and lots of naps in my future.

ernest now topping the scales at 51.5 lbs
Update: i'm at the vet. I seem to be having a foxtail crises.

Send help.

I am having a day.

I seem to be a bit lethargic which could be due to heat.

I am happy to eat my amendments and what biscuits are thrown my way.

I am not happy to eat kibble.

I am happy to curl up under a duvet in 80 degree weather.

I was bitten on my schnoz by a wasp. I am now lopsided.

yours is a very bad hotel

Oh Hi!

Where was I?

Right.

Three day weekend, busy moms and lots of walks.

All I can say is on the fourth of July I encountered four great danes at the dog park.

My neck still hurts from looking up.

We went to watch the fireworks. The oohing and aahing and flashing lights kept me up past my bedtime.

I hate that. However, the next day we all slept in until 6:20 am.

Is that cool or what?

This morning nmom took me on my normal early morning walk.

She forgot to cook my squashes. We had udon noodles with chicken broth, kaffir lime leaves, mushrooms and chicken instead.

Mom needs to forget more often. It was delicious.

She went to do a bit of volunteering, came home to grab a cup of coffee and change for more appropriate work attire. I asked to go out. She leashed me up and off we went for a .....

ROACH! LAY DOWN! FLAT BASSET!

at 9:34 am.

Nmom while thinking it was cute really wanted to go to work. All my pleadings, passive agressiveness, adorableness and mind bending did not work this time to keep her at home with me.

Off she went to make the world safe against impending tidal waves and the data that is used to validate the models of such things.

So boring.

At least she came home early to take me for a walk and then spent some quality time eating bones in the back yard.

She did not do that (bone eating), but supervised my bone chewing.

Shouldn't one be able to call into work at least once a summer and say "I'm calling in well, my dog has decided that today would better be spent roaching and flat basseting than researching which filtering algorithm is appropriate for 15 second data".

For the record, I would never pass up an opportunity to visit my Phracey.

I am back in the 98105. Tired after zooming and terrorizing the others at the AOCB.

Guess what?

I'm going to be a basset in law!

Is that cool or what?

My uncle Al is getting married and his fiancée likes me more than he does. She has excellent taste. She offered to Ernest sit!

Woot!

Another round of Frosty Paws and turkey breast roll ups all around!

[UPDATE]

I am rooming with Kaiser, a weimeraner and a yellow lab who is a distant cousin
of Miss La Brador.

Everything is coolio here. I do not miss my moms at all. Okay, well a little bit.

There are purportedly to be 29 basset hounds here at the Academy for a
party-meetup. They are trying to spring me so that I can work the crowd.

After hearing his sissy was not coming to Seattle

Since early May I have been waking nmom at 5:30 am to go on my walk. She is not that amused, but plays along. She muttered something about work, early, productivity (not my poops), home, garden, dinner and then decided it was ok to start her work day at 7:00 am.

This morning TH mom got up with me and we curled up on the futon and I managed to stay asleep until 6:45 am.

I heart her so much that I curled up with her again after my walk and breakfast.

Currently the moms are working on a model that predicts what conditions will create the perfect flat basseting opportunity. Many factors come into play, so we are applying for NSF funding. Would anybody else like to submit feedback and perhaps act as co-collaborators?
